Enjoy this movie and leave early

If you have seen any of Richard Curtis’ illustrious body of work (Notting Hill, Love Actually), then you probably know exactly what to expect before ever entering the theatre to see Pirate Radio: A huge cast of excellent actors, a solid British story, and once again, Bill Nighy as an alcoholic womanizer. The film’s plot involves a group of radio hosts that have an extraordinary love for rock and roll during the period when it was banned on the radio by the British government. As Pirate Radio is based on a true story, I was concerned that the film would come off as a biopic, but I was very wrong. I don't know if any of what happened in the film actually happened in real life, but I don't care. It was fun to watch a boat full of British radio personalities wait for promiscuous, star-struck women to come aboard for the express purpose of having "a snog". And when a guy named Twat is put in charge of bringing down this vessel of radio hosts, you know you are going to leave happy.

The Kinks, Procol Harum, and Cat Stevens make up only a few artists in the giant soundtrack that seems to be playing at all the right times. It may seem weird to watch a movie about people talking into a microphone, but luckily, the way Pirate Radio chooses to handle boring radio banter is to have as little of it as possible. Curtis seems more interested in focusing on what takes place outside of the radio studio, following his memorable cast of characters around their spacious boat. The cast have great chemistry and I found myself and all the other stuffy film snobs laughing out loud. The film is just good, old-fashioned fun. I know what people say about British humour, but somehow Pirate Radio or The Boat that Rocked (the original title), or what ever you want to call it, overcomes much of that stereotype and delivers an hour and a half of pure entertainment. My only criticism about this film is the melodramatic conclusion which comes seemingly out of nowhere; however, this can be avoided by simply leaving the film five minutes early.

Pirate Radio is Playing in Canadian theatres beginning on Friday, November 13th

A note from the editor!

I just wanted to mention (in the interest of publishing ethics and transparency), that this article was written by a cousin of the publishers of Crab Town. In honour of this, we got to make our first use of the "Nepotism" category. This is reserved for those articles where Crab Town shows how we like to "keep it in the family". After all, this is a family publication.

What do people say about

What do people say about British humour? What is this stereotype that has been overcome?

Thanks for the review. I was on the fence about seeing this one (loved The Vicar of Dibley but felt burned by Mr Bean's Holiday), but I think I'll see it now. Viva la British invasion!
